Here are 8 winter fashion trends to wear this season, according to stylists
I’m the same way if you’re not ready for autumn to end. Our best defense against the chill is our clothing on our backs, otherwise known as cute winter outfits, which are especially true on the East Coast (fall lasts approximately .2 seconds in New Jersey). Winter is inevitable.
The frigid weather creates the perfect fashion environment. There are so many pieces to play around with, from cozy sweaters to statement coats, not to mention hats, scarves, and boots you can wear. You need to create looks that are both fashionable and functional, with pieces that look cute while also keeping you warm.
Here are 8 sweater outfits you can wear this winter
As inspiration, we asked stylists what winter outfits they can’t wait to create once the seasons change, and it really got our creative juices flowing.
Black Leather
If you want to look pulled-together and feel as if you have “nothing” to wear, black from head to toe will always be a look. It’s classic, timeless, and foolproof. In case you’re looking for an upgrade, the New York Stylist Liz Teich says that black is coming back for winter 2023 in the form of leather.
“I was resistant to vegan leather for a while because it can hurt the environment and quality leather is so expensive, but I’ve found great recycled leather pants and a pre-owned leather mini skirt to get my fix,” Twitch tells InStyle. I will definitely reach for leather pants before my sweats this season to be cozy yet put-together, as they are such a comfortable alternative to hard pants (i.e. jeans).

Matching Sweatsuits
There’s no denying that the matching set trend is still going strong, especially as the temperatures drop and loungewear looks become more appealing. Brandon Nicholas H, a wardrobe stylist, says oversized matching sweatsuits are the go-to look for the upcoming season, paired with an oversized trench or oversized denim jacket and cowboy boots.
This outfit represents winter fashion to me. With its mix of athleisure and grunge, it brings to mind Princess Diana and Bella Hadid. It gives you that effortless fashion look everyone wants while still feeling like you’re watching a holiday movie at home.”
Mixed Proportions
During winter 2023, Jordan Stolch, personal style advisor for MiKADO Personal Styling, tells InStyle that more fabric means more room to experiment with different silhouettes.
Stolch shares exploring with proportions is key to achieving a cool look. It’s the unusual combinations that matter, not necessarily the particular items being worn. One of their favoured ensembles this season consists of a thin-knit turtleneck beneath an oversized boyfriend button down; another involves pairing a leather mini skirt with tights, boots and a boxy blazer; and their third combo is wide-leg trousers coupled with an unstructured wool coat and a long-sleeved tee.

Combat Boots
Vanessa Valiente, a San Diego-based personal stylist, is excited about lace-up combat boots for winter because they strike a balance between fashion and function.
It is a trend that emerged a few years ago, but has since developed into a wide range of offerings from different designers. “This winter, there are so many au courant combat boots that aren’t only comfortable but waterproof, and they can be paired with everything from cropped wide-leg pants and leggings to a formal frock for an edgy look.”
Faux Fur Accessories
Not only are faux fur coats and fuzzy-lined boots a must for winter 2023 (and likely every winter thereafter), but celebrity stylist Mickey Freeman is calling this the year of faux fur handbags and headwear, including baseball caps, trapper hats, buckets, and beanies, all styled in an elevated way.
“[2023] will be a time when furry accessories will come back on the scene, including furry headwear and handbags,” Freeman says. These cold-weather staples have already been reworked by fashion brands such as Loewe, Marni, The Attico, and Dries Von Noten, among others, with interesting colorways and materials such as shearling, mohair, brushed wool/alpaca, feathers, and treated faux fur.”

Puffer Pants
For winter 2023, Freeman says puffer coats are back as the season’s mascot, but reimagined.
Taking inspiration from the traditional puffer parka, Freeman insists that the puffer/insulated pant is a must-have for the winter season. Loewe’s Creative Director Jonathan Anderson will also enflate sunglasses for its Fall/Winter collection. For frigid temperatures, complete the look with a puffer balaclava from Eugenia Kim.”
Turtleneck Dresses
Turtleneck dresses are Naina Singla’s most anticipated trend for the 2023 winter season due to their effortless sophistication.
It is so easy to wear an aturtleneck dress on cold days, either as a maxi or a shorter length, Singla says. For a more cozy winter look, choose lightweight materials like sheer georgette (Khaite makes a gorgeous one), cashmere, or knitwear.
Dressing for the weather is never a priority for celebrities
Balletcore
Balletcore was first reported as a budding trend by InStyle in January 2022, but it seems the look is getting a second wind for 2023.
Singla expresses her enthusiasm for the delicate, dainty aesthetic happening in fashion right now. Miu Miu set the trend in motion with their ballet flats for Fall and Prada is continuing it with Mary Janes and leg warmers. She’s also a fan of winter slip-dresses, especially if they’re in pastel shades and have longer hemlines. To take this look to a cozier level, simply add an oversized knit jumper and chunky boots.
